Out of the Darkness Walk - Birmingham
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in over 250 communities across the country this year, with the proceeds benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, you will be walking with thousands of other walkers nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. In deciding to walk you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.
Online Registration
*Online registration closes at noon the day before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk! Please know that walk donations are accepted until December 31st 2012.

SOAR Training

The SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery (SOAR) Project is an interagency collaboration designed to train in methods to expedite the Social Security application process.
Services are targeted to adults (18 years of age and older) that are homeless and have
a history of serious and persistent mental illness (SMI), or co-occurring disorders of SMI and substance use to include individuals that are:
- Currently homeless
- At risk of becoming homeless
- Lacking housing
- Residing in “doubled up" living arrangements
- In a primary residence during the night; in a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations
- Residents of transitional housing
Training Application and Agenda
The following are a listing of dates and locations for this series:
- Sep. 25-26, 2012 — Huntsville
- Nov. 8-9, 2012 — Montgomery
- Jan. 30-31, 2013 — Mobile
- Mar. 14-15, 2012 — Birmingham
- Jun. 5-6, 2012 — Huntsville

*Requires a $30 per approved applicant fee
