Commie W. Carter, Director
In support of the mission of the Alabama Department
of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, the Office of
Staff Development is committed to the quality and
effectiveness of our staff and to the services they
provide. It is our continuing effort to prepare our
Department to meet the challenges of the future through
the development and facilitation of training and
educational programs and activities that build
competencies and create an organizational culture for
successful mental health practice. It is our
responsibility to...
- provide system-wide training and development
opportunities to increase current workforce
knowledge and skills, and to meet future skill needs
of the department,
- provide continuing education opportunities for
certified or licensed healthcare professionals
enabling fulfillment of continuing education
obligations for professional licenses and
certifications,
- provide direct and indirect learning experiences
which ensure that both new employees and career
employees' training needs are satisfied, and to
- promote personal and professional growth
Continuing Education
Our Continuing Education programs provide on-site and
accessible opportunities for staff to keep current in
their respective disciplines/fields, as well as provide
a continuous opportunity for maintaining professional
licensures and certifications. The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental
Retardation is an approved provider of continuing
education in the following disciplines:
Continuing education credits are available for
eligible training events and activities, including
seminars, conferences, retreats, special programs,
workshops, employee orientation programs, and core
curricula topics planned in accordance with the
standards set by accrediting boards and councils. Many
of the training activities planned and/or coordinated by
our office are designed to meet the educational needs of
the department and its employees; however, as a
community education opportunity we welcome other state
agencies and private citizens to participate in our
training opportunities on a space available basis.
The Office of Staff Development is the central
control point for facilitation and coordination of the
“Prospective Community Provider Orientation.” This
office also serves as the central repository for all
employee training records, in addition to providing
support for the department’s seven state facilities and
hospitals, and its developmental center.
